The story of Te Mātāwai

Te Mātāwai is a digital timebank helping residents of New Zealand's largest public housing initiative.

Kāinga Ora, a government agency for social housing in New Zealand, selected Made Open through a competitive tender to develop a special online hub for residents of a major new public housing project in Auckland.

Te Mātāwai was officially opened by Prime Minister Chris Hipkins on 3rd August 2023.

The central Auckland complex comprises 276 apartments providing different types of housing, such as social housing, temporary accommodation, and rentals.

Our platform assists Te Mātāwai residents in feeling connected, supported and a part of the community. The platform also provides access to events, support and services that enhance their well-being and development.

This project is a pioneering effort in New Zealand's evolving housing landscape.

A key aim is to help staff engage tenants, assisting them in forming stronger social connections and improving their well-being.

Robert Woolf, Director of Made Open, explains:

This community platform offers features that empower even the most vulnerable residents to learn new skills and access opportunities. It aligns with Te Mātāwai's values of nurturing residents, promoting fairness and equality.

Residents can use the platform to:
