Communities are where life happens
Between work and home, there is community.
The places where neighbours help each other. Where local organisations step in when people need support. Where ideas are shared, time is given and people work together to make things better. These spaces are essential to healthy, thriving societies.
But today, many communities are under pressure.
Whats the problem?
Local governments are struggling to meet rising demand for public services with shrinking budgets. At the same time, charities and community organisations are facing a “perfect storm” of rising costs, declining income and increasing demand for support.
Across the UK, more than 80% of charities report higher demand for their services, while funding uncertainty and rising operational costs are forcing many to scale back the support they can provide.
Meanwhile, traditional support networks, like extended families, neighbourhood groups and informal community connections are becoming more fragmented. More people are feeling isolated, and the systems designed to support them are stretched.
The gap between what communities need and what existing systems can provide continues to grow.
Our belief
At Made Open, we believe strong communities are fundamental to wellbeing.
They are the places where information flows, time and skills are shared and people come together to solve problems and support one another.
We believe everyone has something to give.
And when people are given the opportunity to contribute - through time, knowledge, skills or resources - communities become stronger and more resilient.
Because community isn’t a luxury.
It’s essential to our health, resilience and purpose.
Our vision
Our vision is to build healthier, happier communities by creating the conditions for people and organisations to connect, collaborate and contribute.
We design platforms that strengthen real-world relationships - spaces where neighbours, organisations, teams and changemakers can unite around shared goals and take action together.
Places where people don’t just connect. They belong.
How we work
Made Open combines community technology with partnership strategy and service design to help places work better together.
A platform for community collaboration
Our platform helps people and organisations connect around shared goals and collaborate on place based initiatives.
It provides a trusted space where communities can:
- Share information and opportunities
- Connect skills, time and resources
- Crowdsource ideas and support for local projects
- Build networks around shared priorities
Beyond helping groups and organisations share information, it unlocks the hidden strengths within communities - including people’s skills, knowledge and time.
Designed to be flexible and scalable, Made Open can be configured for any place or professional network, helping members develop a shared sense of identity and belonging.
Open APIs allow the platform to integrate with other systems such as social prescribing and public services, while built-in intelligent reporting helps partners understand what’s happening across their community and how they can respond.
Strategy, partnerships and impact
We recognise that technology alone doesn’t build strong communities. People and partnerships do.
Alongside the platform, we work with organisations to design stronger place-based partnerships and more connected local systems.
We support:
- Place Based Partnerships
- Integrated Care Systems
- Local authorities
- Voluntary sector collaborations
- Individual organisations working to improve their communities
Through structured workshops, service design and partnership development, we help organisations align priorities, reduce duplication and develop practical ways of working together.
By combining strategy, partnership development and digital infrastructure, Made Open helps communities mobilise local assets, strengthen collaboration and create meaningful social impact.
Why we started
Made Open was created from more than 15 years of experience working on complex social challenges.
Our founders have worked with citizens, businesses, governments and public sector organisations across the UK to co-design better services and more collaborative ways of working.
Through this work, one thing became clear:
Communities already hold many of the answers to the challenges they face. What’s often missing are the tools, connections and shared spaces that allow people to come together and act.
We started Made Open to create those spaces.
To connect people.
To unlock local potential.
And to help communities move forward together.
