What are we looking for in an image?
Your homepage is responsive across devices with different screens. This means you'll need to choose an image that works across the three main sizes (desktop, tablet, & mobile).
We recommend an image around 1,900 x 991 px.
There are a few things that we recommend to consider about the composition of your main image. However, as your homepage design and your main image are dependent on each other, you'll need to consider which homepage template you'll go with when you choose your images.
Consider the focal points of the image
- The focal points of this image are the eyes and pink lipstick.
- The buttons hide the nose.
- Which parts of the image do you want to see clearly?
Avoid low quality images
- Image has a low resolution and is not big enough for desktop.
- The faces are all hidden behind this homepage design.
Avoid text within graphics
- Text behind the title and buttons is distracting.
- The responsive nature of the page will mean there's always a bit cropped.
- Text within an image is an accessibility 'no-no'.
- SEO does not pick up text within an image file.
- Screenreaders and other code designed to enlarge or colour text cannot work.
Some contrasting colours are needed
- The blue background is too similar to the button colours and they do not stand out.
- The graphic is the wrong resolution and is blurry.
- There are blank spaces to the left and right of the title and buttons.
Simple doesn't always work
- The background is a simple texture.
- This could work for a 'montage' or 'carousel' template, but doesn't work in this example.
- There isn't much there to grab the eye.
Busy can be too much
- This image is too low in resolution.
- It work wells to resize the screen size across different devices.
- It's very busy and distracts from the blue buttons.
- Your eye doesn't know where to go.
